The process  to receive approval for this tool isTo start the process, please:

  1. Check below to see that your use falls within guidelines
  2. Complete, sign, and submit the MIT 
  3. Complete and submit the the  for this tool
  4. You will be contacted Contact us to discuss your plan and use mit-making-at-home@mit.eduthe plan, feasibility, modifications, etc.
  5. If the checklist:
    1. Directs you to complete training/etc, do not proceed, we will contact you to discuss
    2. Does not require more training/etc, you may use the tool

Minimum required PPE and precautions (more may be required based on circumstance)

  • Use on foams that have been approved for hot cutting in areas with adequate ventilation

    • OK to cut: polystyrene, polyethylene, EVA

    • Not OK to cut: polyurethane, polyisocyanurate

  • Adequate ventilation is satisfied if using

    • Outdoors: in a wide open space (not in a shed)

    • Indoors: with an adequate active exhaust system (paint booth, fume hood, fans and windows that provide cross flow ventilation).

  • If you must cut indoors, contact us (mit-makingremote-at-home@mitmaking@mit.edu) and we can advise on ventilation
