If the document itself says "project whirlwind" then you can presume DIC 6345
If not, use DIC indicated on document or delete MIT DIC element from xml file.
About series names:
Here are numbers for Whirlwind or Whirlwind related projects we've
identified from looking at "print" reports from the MITRE donation and also
early Servomechanisms Lab material we processed about 5 years ago when LIDS
transferred them. I think of 6345 and 7002 as the two central "whirlwind"
project numbers.
#6295, Aircraft and Stability and Control Analyzer project
#6345, Project Whirlwind
#6673, Air Traffic Control Project
#6782, Navy Fire Control
#7002, Project Whirlwind
I've never been able to tell exactly when but at some point 6345 was
"reissued" as grant # 7002. My sense is that 7002 became the number once
Whirlwind was up and running out of the development/building phase into
testing the SAGE project and other Lincoln Lab research from late 1952
through 58 or 59, but that's just a guess. We do have a microfilm of early
DIC/OSP grant files, I've never looked at it to get to the specifics of this
question, but if a defined year for the start of 7002 would help sort it out
then we could get the grants microfilm from storage and take a look.
