2 proposed solutions!

1) Mechanical Relief Valve w/ Cap

Overview: A mechanical two possible pressure solutions: one has no data required, controls problem to worry about data is needed
Mechanical relief valve that automatically opens based on how much pressure is inside the tank and will close on its own as a spring force returning will bring it back to its closed, neutral position. We can order one that has the pressure requirements we need. In order to keep pressure constant during launch, we will have a cap system that keeps the valve closed at all times, which will only be opened by a servo motor (which would be attached to the chassis of the satellite) right before we start controlling the tank spinning and begin the experiment.

Pros:

  • Fully mechanical except for the cap system
  • Can get custom-made
  • Simpler calculations
  • No need for a control system

Cons:

  • The cap

...

  • system will be quite complicated and has potential for leaks during launch (3d print maybe)
  • Potential wear on the system could make the system less accurate
  • More testing needs to be completed to make sure we are properly releasing pressure and not letting too much leave

2) Controlled Solenoid Valve

Overview: A solenoid valve that is controlled by a motor system that will control the opening of the valve to adjust the pressure inside the tank. Will take in pressure data and adjust valve to make sure within range of pressures we need.

Pros:

  • Singular system ( no cap needed )
  • More precise system as taking in data measurements real time from OBC

Cons:

  • Motor system of solenoid valve needs to be attached to the tank
    • Either another slip ring or really wacky torque calcs / rotations
  • Complicated system set up
  • Create something to latch onto valve to adjust valve opening (3d print)
  • During fail mode, will still need power to make sure pressure doesn't keep increasing
