Reference & instruction for reorganization (guest: Ann Whiteside 1 hour total)
Background and ideas from RISG (20 mins)
- Look at projects and goals.
- Look at service vision statement, and explain why it’s still relevant.
- Talk about our perspective on staffing the reference desk. Some main points:
- Shouldn’t be single model; every unit is unique
- Still feel it’s important to have librarians involved with desk work, although the data doesn’t necessarily back it up. The intangible things are still important!
- There has to be a lot of communication to build knowledge and trust between librarians and support staff.
- Librarians are important in the training of desk staff.
- Serving in the location where users are is valuable.
Questions for Ann (20 mins)
- There needs to be a lot of thought about service points between a few bubble heads. How can we be involved in that discussion?
- Can you talk about how you see your own role?
- How do you see the relationship between your bubble & others, including bubbles on the "information assets" side?
- How can people currently in charge of specialized services (GIS, bioinformatics, etc.) maintain autonomy and not have to get approval for every little thing. At the same time, how can they increase collaboration with colleagues?
- What are your thoughts about how AMPS will fit into the new organization?
- There are a lot of services listed in the description for the Specialized Services. What's NOT in your scope?
- Do you think that having your staff together in same space is a good thing, or are there merits to having staff offices located throughout the system?
- What will your department's relationship with the collections side look like? If people in your department need equipment and databases, how will that work?
