Instructor / Student View

From the instructor view, you can toggle the display mode between instructor and student view to see how the page will appear to your students by clicking on the "show student view link" at the top of the page. The gray link is the currently selected mode.

As displayed in the Student view, Students can open, download, and save topic materials to their own desktop. Students cannot edit or reorder topic materials.

Note

The instructor view will still show all of the students if the instructor clicks on an assignment where a student will only see their own name.

Hiding Materials from Students


Hiding a document, webpage, or weblink from students will make a document invisible to the student as if it does not exist on the page. You can also preview a student's view of the materials page (which will not contain the hidden document).

Directions to Hide Materials:
  1. Toggle Cloak

    Click Materials in the navigation bar.

Collapse and Expand Topic Materials

The Collapse and Expand Topic Materials tool allows users to view all the materials under a certain topic or only view the topic names. When a course topic is expanded you see: the date the material was last modified, the materials type icon, the title, the edit icon, the delete icon, the summary (if one was provided), the name of the person who last modified the document, and the due date (if the is an assignment with a due date).

  • Click the plus sign to expand an individual topic and view the materials under that topic.
  • Click the minus sign to collapse materials and view only the topic names.

    To view an entire list of topic materials at the same time, click "Expand All Topics" or to hide the list, click "Collapse All Topics".

Show Certain Materials

Users can choose to filter which Materials they wish to view on the materials page. This filter tool allows users to view certain material types at a time or view all materials.

Directions to Show Certain Materials:
  1. Toggle Cloak

    Click the "Show" down arrow to open a list of Material Types that have been added to the topic.

  2. Choose a material type, or choose to show all material types by selecting the "All Kinds" option.
  3. Click the "Go" button to display the materials page according to the item selected on the show drop-down list.
Directions to Listing Materials by Type:

When there is a long list of documents, webpages, and weblinks on the Materials page, there are three ways to make the sorting through the documents easier:

  • On the Materials page, select an option from the !show.jpg!dropdown menu(near the top of the page) to list just that type of document. This option is available to both instructors and students.
  • Convert the standard navigation bar to an OCW-style navigation bar. This automatically lists links to pages of each type of document.
  • Manually create links to lists of types of materials in the standard navigation bar by editing it in Advanced Mode.

Material Reordering

Note

The type of materials consists: Others, Syllabus, Assignments, Lecture note, Reading, Resources.
The kind of materials consists: Assignment, Document, Web page, Web link.

Instructors can change the order of materials within a topic. They can also move materials to another topic.

Directions to Reorder Materials within a Topic:
  1. Toggle Cloak

    Click 'the change document order' link to open the change document order form.

  2. Select a single course material in the current list order or select the type of material whose order you would like to change.
  3. Toggle Cloak

    Click the up or down arrows to change its placement in the material list for the topic.

Directions to Move a Material to a Different Topic:

    Next to the line "Associate with topic", click the dropdown menu and choose the topic you want to move the material to.

Drag and Drop Topic Reordering

Instructors can change the order of topics (with the corresponding materials moving accordingly) with the new Drag and Drop Trop Reordering tool.

Directions to Reorder Topics:
  1. Toggle Cloak

    Place your cursor on a Course Topic heading; the cursor changes to a hand.

  2. Press and hold down the mouse button and drag the Course Topic to a new location in the list.
  3. Click "Save Topic Order" to commit your changes to the order of topics.
