You can refer to Course & Degree Requirements page for more details of the modules and the requirements for obtaining a MS or PhD degree. For instance, if you are admitted into the PhD program, consider the suggested timeline on page PhD Requirements.

How to register classes?

There is this magical day called Registration Day at the beginning of each semester that you go meet with your "your Registration Advisor" (who , who is typically assigned to you based your last name initial, and may or may not be in your area) and basically have s/he signing off on research area. The meeting is anywhere between 5 to 20 mins, and basically involve your officer looking at the list of classes you want to take and making sure you are on track for your degree program.

More specifically it goes like:

  • You get an email from our amazing Heather or Clare about pre-registering for classes before semester starts (need double check – and yes it looks like incoming students may not need to pre-register ?too!)
  • You should be assigned a Registration Officer/Advisor and a time slot to meet on Registration Day. Previous years there is typically a departmental breakfast event during on the morning of the Registration Day where everyone sits all the graduate students sit together and chat until it's your time to meet with the Registration Advisor, so no worries as older graduate students will point you at the right direction.
  • Your Registration Officer should approve your classes electronically after the meeting.
  • You should get an email reminding you to finish the registration process, which basically involve clicking through a couple of buttons to update your personal information.

Registration Officers in our department advice in very different styles. Some may always approve your list of classes, while others may been challenging challenge your class choices every semester. When in doubt, ask older graduate students or Clare or your thesis advisor. Keep in mind Clare can always approve your class selection (this is especially the case when your registration officer forgot to Typically your registration officer approves your classes by the end of the first week of school. If this did not happen, let Clare know and she can approve your classes....)

You need to register to get paid.
