Generally, the times are equally spaced, and one can tell at a glance whether an object is remaining at a constant velocity, or if it is accelerating}acceleration. Below are the steps to construct a motion diagram:

Step 1: Draw dots representing the position of the object at equal time intervals (in red in the figure).

Step 2: Draw arrows representing the velocity vector in the direction of motion. The relative length of the arrows should indicate the speed of the object. One way to draw the arrows is to calculate . One can obtain the average velocity between two such marked positions by measuring the distance between these positions and dividing by the time interval between them .(blue arrows in the figure).

Step 3: Draw an arrow representing Δv, the change in the velocity vector, which allows a motion diagram commonly shows position at each position, but it might also show the velocity with an attached vector at each position, allowing you to determine the average acceleration between positions easily (brown arrow in the figure).
