How to access the server
On a Windows computer (screenshots from Windows 7; other versions are similar)
- From your desktop or the Start menu, select My Computer.
- Type \\weisslab\weisslab into sandbox into the location bar (circled in red, above.)
- When it asks for your username and password, type WIN\yourusername (substituting your MIT user name for yourusername) and your MIT (Athena) password.
- IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU INCLUDE WIN\ BEFORE YOUR USERNAME; ELSE THE SERVER WON'T LOG YOU ON.

- The main folder appears. The contents of each of these directories is described below.
- If you want to assign the server a drive letter (like Z:), click the server name weisslab circled in red above.
- You will see that the server has a share named weisslab sandbox. Right click on the share and select "Map network drive..."
- In the next dialog, select a drive letter. The folder and credentials are already set. If you would like to reconnect to the server the next time you log on (recommended), select "Reconnect at logon". Click finish.
- You can now access the server from a drive letter on your Windows computer.
On a Mac
- Select the Finder from the launcher. From the "Go" menu, select "Connect to Server".
- In the "Connect to Server" dialog box, enter smb://weisslab/weisslab sandbox (note the forward slash "/" instead of the backward slash "\")
- The next dialog SHOULD ask you for your credentials. If for some reason it says you don't have permissions, OS X may have cached incorrect credentials. Instead, you can try specifying your username smb://WIN\yourusername@weisslab/weisslabsandbox, like so:
- Now log in. Type your username as WIN\yourusername and use your Athena (MIT) password. Leave "Registered User" selected; the server does not allow guest access.
- IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ENTER WIN\ IN FRONT OF YOUR USERNAME; ELSE THE SERVER WON'T LOG YOU ON.
- The server will show up in the Finder sidebar under "Shared."

What's in each of these directories? (Ie, where's my old stuff?)
- home\yourusername -- Your new home directory! You have write access; everyone else has read access.
- home\yourusername\incoming -- Everyone can write to this directory. Good for sharing stuff.
- lab_theses -- self-explanatory.
- lab_talks -- organized by year. If you haven't put previous talks on the AFS space, please put them here!
- old_scope -- microscope images moved over from the Zeiss and Leica computers.
- old_afs -- a snapshot of the synbio AFS volume as of 18 January 2013
How do I save new microscope / gel / flow data?
People logging in and out from instrument computers is a pain. Instead, SAVE NEW DATA TO W:\home\yourusername\incoming.
