Project Whirlwind Controlled Distribution Memo D6D-### (I'm not certain what the D-series memos are. This is a guess as to how we might name them. See Reel 2: MC665_r12_6D-108-2.pdf. --Todd)

I've never been able to tell exactly when but at some point 6345 was
"reissued" as grant # 7002. My sense is that 7002 became the number once
Whirlwind was up and running out of the development/building phase into
testing the SAGE project and other Lincoln Lab research from late 1952
through 58 or 59, but that's just a guess. We do have a microfilm of early
DIC/OSP grant files, I've never looked at it to get to the specifics of this
question, but if a defined year for the start of 7002 would help sort it out
then we could get the grants microfilm from storage and take a look.

This Project is an outgrowth of the activities of the Institute Committee on Machine Methods of Computation, established in November 1950. The purpose of the Project is (1) to integrate the efforts of all the departments and groups at MIT who are working with modern computing machines and their applications, and (2) to train men in the use of these machines for computation and numerical analysis. People from several departments of the Institute are taking part in the project." (From MC665_r23_sr-41.pdf in Reel 23)

In reel 12 there are some documents that appear to be a D-Series. This may refer to "controlled distribution"-- see Reel 212: MC665_r12_6D-108-2.pdf. See also MC665_r27_6D-52-1-3.pdf in Reel 27. How should we label these? --Todd
