service

This resource is operated and maintained by the Educational Technology Consultant's Group, which is part of Academic Computing, which is part of Content and Collaboration Group, Information Services and Technology at MIT. This is a pilot project.

How's it Work?

The wiki uses Confluence, a popular enterprise wiki application developed by Atlassian Software.
We are currently (spring 2009) running Confluence version 2.7.3
Confluence is segmented into wiki 'Spaces'. A space can be either world readable or restricted, with varying permission levels, to members of a given group (or set of groups). Each space has an administrator or administrative group associated with it.
Members of the admin group can control some elements of the look and feel of the space and can manage the users and user group(s) associated with that space.

For instance:
You are currently in the 'Welcome to the Academic Computing Wiki', or 'TOP' space. This space is world-readable, and permissions are set such that anyone in the group confluence-users (anyone with an account) can add comments. To get to any of the wiki's private spaces requires eithera member of the MIT Community, access to a restricted wiki space requires:

  • a valid MIT certificate
    and
    or
  • to have logged in to the MIT Touchstone service.

AND

  • membership in a Moira group or Stellar class list which has been granted access to the space

OR, for non-MIT users..

...

  • or
  • to have been granted individual access to the space

For a non-MIT person, access to a restricted wiki space requires:

  • a MIT Touchstone Collaboration Account.

AND

  • membership in the appropriate Moira/Confluence group
    or
  • to have been granted individual access to the space

All users should also have cookies and javascript enabled in browser settings.

  • membership is generally managed by the administrator of the space in question (see below)

You must also have cookies and javascript enabled in your browser.

...

To have a space created for your group:

A wiki space needs to be requested and set up centrally. Contact confluence-space-request@mit.edu with the following information:

  • Name and purpose of the space.
  • Name of a person or persons who will administer the space.
The spaces' administrator group will be able manage permissions for the space, based on Moira groups. The Moira groups can include entries of type 'kerberos' (MIT username) and 'string' (use email address for non-MIT users).

You can request a wiki site using the Wiki Request Form

For Stellar-related class sites, access to the wiki space is linked to the Stellar faculty and student lists.
