Hiring Rules For MSRED Teaching Assistants

  • 12-unit courses get 10-hours per week for a TA (50% effort)
  • 6-unit courses get 5-hours per week for a TA (25% effort)
  • 3-unit courses typically do not get a TA

Salary

  • The CRE will match the salary rates implemented by DUSP.
  • For TA positions, the CRE will not match any tuition benefit
  • For RA positions, it is expected that the CRE will match both the salary and tuition benefit that DUSP offers.

Exceptions

  • RED Studio (18 units) may have more than 1 TA

Deadlines

  • Make sure to adhere to Union Deadlines for entering appointments into GAP. The GAP system will use the information entered to generate an offer letter to the student.
  • It is more important to have the letter out in time than to have all the information related to the job so if there are missing pieces, (i.e., hours, work location, etc.) process the letter anyway.
  • The additional information can be entered by the supervisor using the ATLAS app.

The GAP is used for all aid awards and for TA/RA appointments.
There are instances when a student might be hired as a Student Hourly Worker.

Entering a Student into GAP

  1. Select "Create New" and identify the kind of appointment you're creating, and the semester it will be for.

  2. Select the student from a drop-down menu.

    1. Note: some dual degree students don't show up.

    1. You will need to contact their home department administrator to input an award on your behalf.

  1. Input the amount of tuition and/or stipend for the entire semester the student will be receiving.

This will be based on percentage of effort (100%=20hours; 50%=10 hours; 25%=5 hours PER WEEK)

  2. Input the account(s) the funds will be coming from

    1. GAP uses percentages not monetary amounts, so if you have to split an award, you must use percentages.

  3. You may then enter the students advisor to alert them to the award (not necessary, but you may want to; I typically do not)

  4. Always be sure the list of individuals selected to receive a copy of the award include Cheryl Gillespie, Bettina Urcuioli, the student, and if there is a name followed by "CO XXXXXXX", that individual is the administrator of the identified CO, and should be included as well.

  5. You may want to include a message to the student letting them know their award is in process and it will be reflected on their account shortly.

  6. Select "Submit"

    1. If you have some, but not all, information for an appointment, you may instead fill in what you know and select "Save and Exit" while you wait for other pieces of information.
