MIT Relations

Theater Arts Faculty

The President must maintain a strong link between the Ensemble and the Theater Arts Faculty. To foster this link, the President must attend the monthly Theater Arts meeting. To be aware of Ensemble issues, the President must attend all Ensemble and Ensemble officer meetings. The President must disseminate information from the Ensemble to the faculty and vice versa as needed. The President must be prepared to work with the faculty when concerns about the Ensemble arise.

Constitution

The President shall be responsible for ensuring that all constitutional amendments are lodged with the MIT Association of Student Activities.

External Relations

The President must field questions and concerns from outside groups such as the Office of the Arts, other theater groups, other departments, and students interested in the program. The President is not required to deal with issues involving tour planning or publicity for shows. The President may ask the Chair to call meetings. If the Chair is not able to attend a meeting, the President will run the meeting. The President is a link between any Consulting or visiting director and the Ensemble. If the director has difficulties working with any Ensemble member, or with the rehearsal process, the director can bring these issues to the President's attention. The Ensemble officers, the consulting director, and visiting director should then work together to resolve the issue.

What do we want to do with this?

Questions

ensemble will occasionally be invited to Theater Arts meetings. You should go or find someone to take your place. At the beginning of the meeting, you will be asked to give an update about the ensemble. No need to be formal, just a summary of what has happened lately. Tell them how well the latest show is going! The faculty will then ask if you want any help or advice before giving you a brief TA update. Ask them to help by advertising to their classes. You will be asked to leave the meeting before they start discussing their own internal affairs.

Theater Groups

Be aware of what other theater groups on campus are doing. Do publicity exchanges with them. Plan events to see their shows. Maintain good relations with all of them. We borrow a lot of things from MTG. Our Masonite is shared with MTG and E33.

Constitution

According to the constitution, the President should run meetings if the Chair is absent. In addition, the President is responsible for interpreting the constitution. At such times, you may wish to consult with other Senior members of the ensemble. Ultimately, use your best judgement.

The President should also update the constitution as necessary (when changes are passed). A copy of the constitution is kept within the Officer files, as well as on the Ensemble website. The directions for how to update the constitution on the website are here: How to Edit the Constitution for ABSOLUTE NOVICES. LIKE. NO CS KNOWLEDGE AT ALL.pdf

The chair should email out instructions about how to propose amendments, but make sure to remind them if they forget.

Large-Format printer

Charge groups $2 per linear foot of printed page. The printer as been in an in-between state of repair for a while.

External Affairs

Director

Make sure the director and any other professionals from outside MIT are treated with respect and treat the ensemble with respect. Though the producer will usually handle this, it is ultimately the responsibility of the President. We have a contract the directors should sign before they start working with us (after play choice, in conjunction with other on-boarding paperwork).

Publicity

Though you are not directly responsible for any publicity, it is good to be aware of any ensemble publicity that is occurring outside MIT.

ensemble-alum

Alumni on this list should not be contacted frequently. One email per semester with a general update and invitation to alumni reception should be sent, preferably two or three weeks before the term show.

ensemble-alum-ask

This is a resource for contacting alumni who graduated recently and who are happy to share specific technical advice. You should constantly remind people that this list exists! They tend to forget, but it is extremely useful.ensemble-alum-ask
