Geographic Headings as Main Entry
Local history materials can be assigned under a geographic main entry. However, some geographic headings may be too broad to stand alone, particularly when they relate to areas affiliated with MIT.
The following geographic headings should always be followed by an appropriate subdivision. Please see SHM H1140 Free-Floating Subdivisions: Names of Places and SHM H1845 Local History and Genealogical Source Materials for more information.

If a heading does not exist for the place you are describing, you may formulate a name following SHM H690 Formulating Geographic Headings. For locations in the United States, reference the US Board on Geographic Names to ensure you are using a uniform title.
