Purpose

This specification will define tube diameters for Rocket Team vehicles, maintaining maximum compatibility with commercially available options. This will enable analysis of specific fiber and ply schedules to standardize acceptable loads. These values include built in tolerances.

Hermes I (as-flown)

NameNominal IDNominal ODNotes
Thrust RingN/A6.15Typical feature on COTS motor cases for transferring axial load into air frame components.
Body Tube6.00 in6.17 inBody tube is the typical outer most tube in commercial rockets. Nose cones typically available in this size. A vehicle with a 6in series motor and 6in body tube is referred to as 'minimum diameter'
Coupler5.7755.998 inTypically acts as a structural join between body tube sections. Diameter of motor. A vehicle built from these tubes axially stacked on a motor case is called 'sub-minimum diameter'
Step5.5305.75Typically the size of Avionics Bay bulkhead centering features or joining tubes on sub-minimum diameter vehicles.
