The process  to receive approval for this tool is:

  1. Check below to see that your use falls within guidelines
  2. Complete, sign, and submit the MIT 
  3. Complete and submit the  for this tool
  4. You will be contacted to discuss the plan, feasibility, modifications, etc.
  5. If the checklist:
    1. Directs you to complete training/etc, do not proceed, we will contact you to discuss
    2. Does not require more training/etc, you may use the tool

  • Safety glasses

Most important safety considerations (issues, resources, advice, warnings)

  • Use on foams that have been approved for hot cutting in areas with adequate ventilation

    • OK to cut: polystyrene, polyethylene, EVA

    • Not OK to cut: polyurethane, polyisocyanurate

  • Adequate ventilation is satisfied if using

    • Outdoors: in a wide open space (not in a shed)

    • Indoors: with an adequate active exhaust system (paint booth, fume hood, fans and windows that provide cross flow ventilation).

  • If you must cut indoors, contact us (mit-remote-making@mit.edu) and we can advise on ventilation
