This page outlines steps taken to plan courses for an upcoming semester

Scheduling

  • February
    • Begin planning fall semester
  • October
    • Begin planning Spring Semester

  • Once draft schedule is in place, confirm all dates, times, rooms, etc with teaching faculty.

Data Entry

Teaching Assistants

  • Follow the process to solicit requests for Teaching Assistants

Textbooks

  • Faculty must submit required and recommended textbook information, including author, title, edition and ISBN through the Coop AIP portal: http://www.tinyurl.com/MITCOOPadopt
  • The system is ties to their MIT account so they have to do this themselves.

Canvas

  • All courses automatically get a Canvas site. It will link to the faculty on record.
  • Reach out to all faculty (new faulty in particular) to see if they need assistance setting up their site.
  • Check on special topics as it sometimes will list that faculty member who most recently taught a course using that number and not the current faculty.
  • You will need to update instructor assign but if the former faculty is still listed in Canvas, reach out to Canvas-Support <canvas-support@mit.edu> and ask that the name be removed.
  • Materials from a previous semester can be copied over to the current semester.
  • Make sure to invite Teaching Assistants to the Canvas course. This will not happen automatically.

Field Trips/Special Events or Speakers

  • Capture details on any Field Trips/Special Events or Speakers to add to the MSRED Student Calendar.
  • Make note of any major conflicts with other events or with any CRE Events and inform relevant parties.

Syllabus Collection

  • Collect syllabi in advance of registration.
  • Students often request syllabi of courses they may be interested in registering for.
  • It is also important for historical documentations.
  • Syllabi are kept in the Academics shared drive under Course Content

Final Exams/Presentations

  • Reach to inquire if anyone is hosting a final or presentation after the end of classes.
  • These are scheduled by the registrar.
  • See exception for RED studio
