RISG agenda, Wed., 11/18/09: 9-10:30; Rotch Conference Room (not 100% sure about the time yet!)
Special guests: Howard & Tracy
Minutes: McReynolds (next: Perkins)
Timekeeper: ANY VOLUNTEERS?
Reference & instruction for reorganization (guests: Christine Quirion & Nicole Hennig; 1 hour total)
Background and ideas from RISG (20 mins)
- Look at projects and goals.
- Look at service vision statement, and explain why it’s still relevant.
- Talk about our perspective on staffing the reference desk. Some main points:
- Shouldn’t be single model; every unit is unique
- Still feel it’s important to have librarians involved with desk work, although the data doesn’t necessarily back it up. The intangible things are still important!
- There has to be a lot of communication to build knowledge and trust between librarians and support staff.
- Librarians are important in the training of desk staff.
- Serving in the location where users are is valuable.
Questions for Christine & Nicole (20 mins)
- What are your thoughts about the re-organization process, and how can we help and contribute?
- There needs to be a lot of thought about service points between a few bubble heads. How can we be involved in that discussion?
- Can you each talk about how you see your own roles?
- Christine:
- Where do you see reference coordinators fitting in?
- Any thoughts about training issues for desk staff?
- Nicole:
Location of libraries is important in a lot of ways. How do we preserve the good parts of our divisional units while undergoing potential changes in geography? [DID I GET THIS RIGHT?]
- How do you see your role of designing physical space relating to collections?
RISG responds to Christine & Nicole’s questions (20 mins)
Announcements & updates (15 mins)
Idea spot: add ideas, questions, comments, suggestions, worries, etc.
Meeting topics for the future:
- Soon:
- Invite others re: reorg (ex., Ann Whiteside, anyone else?)
- Stats for online instruction: Does anyone use them in reports, etc.? (Angie, ? mins)
- Postpone/nix:
- JulyAP, IAPril, IAP classes: should we change the formula? (?, ? mins)
- How to support personal information management; Expand cite-help group to include personal information management?
- Spring: Rotate submitting instruction stats in July?
- Late Spring / Summer: consider creating an instruction vision for undergrads.
- Lisa shows us how to use Zoomerang.
Outstanding goals for FY2010: (also see FY10 completed goals)

Think about LibGuides and what we could do better. Reps from local units should make sure the index page points to the best guide (old html or LibGuide) Idea: encourage people to look at LG stats before and after instruction; think about for LibGuides user group meeting; when things are cancelled, they should disappear from db lists. can we make libguides.mit.edu any better? (search box, etc.) - PRIORITY: When things are cancelled, what happens? |

Fall 2009 |
|
Instruction tools for DIRC: Look at tools (ex: http://www.netsupportproducts.com/products/HigherEdSolutions.htmlSMART Sync) and think about if/how we could use them in the DIRC. Find out how much it costs, how much would it get used, how easy it is to setup, and the likelihood of it causing any software conflicts on the machine. |

Brainstormed ideas to consider to add to the timeline:
- Think about how we could facilitate sharing what is learned at conferences and other events with colleagues. Is this feasible or even desirable to do?
- Redo Ask Us page: different focus? simpler way to say it? get rid of library lingo ("research consultation"), etc. (notes from meeting where we discussed this)
To incorporate in FY2010 timeline:
- Ownership of ongoing RISG projects and web pages (review again 1/10)
- Recurring projects (already in FY 2010 timeline)
Past goals:
- FY2010 goals (completed)
- FY2009 goals
- FY2008 goals
