Assigning Students to Sections

Letting Students Choose their own Sections


You set to set a section option that lets students choose their own sections.

Directions to Allow Students Choose their own Sections
  1. Click Membership on the navigation bar.
    Note: Click the Membership link from the class website; you cannot add students to a section from a section website.
  2. Click the 'Manage Sections' tab.
  3. Click the 'Add/Edit Sections' button.
  4. Check the option 'Allow Students' to 'Switch Between Recitation Sections'.
  5. Select the Last Day for Switching from either the calendar or the dropdown lists.
    Note: Students who miss the deadline are designated as "unassigned," and they must be assigned sections by the class staff.
  6. Click the 'Save and Exit Setup' button.

    Advise the students to read the help topic "Choosing or Switching Sections" below.

Directions on Choosing or Switching Sections:

Students can use the same procedure whether they are choosing or switching sections. In both instances, specify the section you want; Stellar moves you into that section, if there are openings, and removes you from the prior section if applicable.

When setting up the sections, the instructor determines whether students can choose or switch sections.

  1. Do one of the following from a page in the class website:
    • Click 'Membership' on the navigation bar. Find your name in the 'Participants list', then click the 'Edit' link in the Section column.
    • Click the name of the section you want to join on the navigation bar. The section's Homepage is displayed. If spaces are available in this section, there is a 'Join . . .' link. Click the 'Join . . .' link.
      Note: If there are no more openings, the page displays a message that you are not a member of the section and that the section is full. Close the message and select a different section.
  2. Select a section on the 'Change Recitation Section page'. (Make sure to choose a section with an opening.)
  3. Click the 'Next' button. The 'Verify Recitation Section' page is displayed.
  4. Confirm that the correct section is selected.
  5. Click the 'Save and Exit Setup' button.

Assign Students to Sections

  1. Click Membership on the navigation bar.
    Note: Click the Membership link from the class website; you cannot add students to a section from a section website.
  2. Click the Change link for the student you want to assign. The Change Recitation Section page is displayed.
    • This page lists all sections for the class and their respective instructor, schedule, location, and number of remaining openings.
  3. Select the section.
  4. Click the 'Next' button. The 'Verify Recitation Section' page is displayed.
  5. Confirm that the student is assigned to the correct section.
  6. Click the 'Save and Exit Setup' button.

Assign Multiple Students to a Section

Batch assigning of students to sections and/or importing pre-registration data will override the section limit.

Directions to Assign Multiple Students to a Section:
  1. Click the 'Membership' link from the main class site.
  2. Click 'Batch Edit' on the top navigation bar.
  3. Select Students by either checking the checkbox next to the student's name or clicking the Select All button.
  4. Choose the Section from the 'Assign selected to' dropdown and click Assign.
    Note: Instructors may assign students to sections initially and still allow students to switch sections later.  Refer back to #4 in the previous section: Let Students Choose their Own Section

Automatically Assign Students to Sections based on Pre-Registration Data


For instructors who prefer bulk assigning students to sections automatically (based on pre-registration data available from the registrar).

Directions to Assign Students to Sections based on Pre-Registration Data:
  1. Create section(s) as outlined in Setting Up Sections.
  2. Click Manage Sections in the navigation bar.
  3. Click the 'Import pre-reg data from WEBSIS' button.

    Notes:
  • If pre-registration data from the registrar information is not available, you will not be able to automatically assign students.
  • You must set up sections first, otherwise you will not be able to automatically assign students.
  • If you have already manually assigned students to a section or sections, you will overwrite those changes by clicking the 'Import pre-reg data from WEBSIS' button.
  • You can also automatically assign students using the drop down menu and clicking the 'Assign' button.

Change Sections in Student view


For students who would like to change sections by their own (Based on the prerequisite that the instructor allow the students to change sections by themselves).

Directions to Change Sections in Student View
  1. Choose the sections you would like to join and click the section tab from the left navigation bar.
  2. From the Section Homepage, if there is still space in this section, you should be able to see the Join button, click it.
  3. From the Change Recitation Section page, choose the section you would like to join and click next. Click Save and Exit Setup in the confirmation page.

Note: Before changing sections, please check the last day for students to change sections, which is set by the instructors
