SUSTAINABILITY, TRADE AND ENVIRONMENT
(Technology, Globalization, and Sustainable Development)
Nicholas A. Ashford, PhD, JD
Professor of Technology and Policy

In addition to technological innovation, the globalization of trade is increasingly seen as the driving force of industrial economies. The establishment of the World Trade Organization, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and other trading regimes raises serious questions concerning their effects on sustainability, which must be viewed broadly to include not only a healthy economic base, but also a sound environment, stable employment, adequate purchasing power, distributional equity, national self-reliance, and maintenance of cultural integrity. This seminar explores the many dimensions of sustainability and the use of national, multinational and international political, legal, and economic mechanisms to further sustainable development. The inter-relationship of global economic/financial changes, the environment employment, and worker health & safety in the context of theories of development, trade, and employment, and the importance of networks and organizational learning are examined. Mechanisms for resolving the apparent conflicts between development, environment, and employment are explored.

iTeams Course

Here is a technology…now what?  If you aspire to learn how to take a technology past the lab, take 10.807/15.371 this fall!

iTeams (“Innovation Teams”, course 10.807/15.371) is a class offered jointly between the Schools of Engineering and Management. Students choose from a set of breakthrough technologies selected by the Class Faculty from MIT labs on the basis of their excitement and commercial potential.  Working with 3-5 class peers plus an industry “Catalyst”, the i-Team focuses throughout the semester on exploring a commercialization strategy for their technology and developing a final recommendation for the next steps and the best vehicle to bring the project to impact (e.g. startup, license, NGO).

You will come out of the class understanding how to build a go-to-market strategy, how to analyze a market and specify its needs, how to identify practical and economically viable applications, how to produce synergy with peers from other disciplines, the importance of intellectual property, and the iterative nature of the innovation process.  The course is led by Dr. Luis Perez-Breva from the School of Engineering, Dr. Noubar Afeyan from Flagship Ventures and Sloan, and Prof. Fiona Murray from Sloan and the Entrepreneurship Center.

Students in the class are invited to lectures by inventors, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists.  They have the opportunity to network with some of the brightest minds in the MIT entrepreneurial ecosystem.

This is a highly sought-after course so contact us quickly!

For more information and course registration details, check out the iTeams website at http://ecenter.mit.edu/iteams/. If you have more questions, contact the TA, Simmy Willemann, at iTeams-TA@mit.edu.

8th Annual Hydrogen Student Design Contest

The 8th annual Hydrogen Student Design Contest is getting underway this fall and we are looking for assistance from universities around the world in letting students know about the Contest and the prize packages available to the winners. More information on past contests, including design submissions, can be found at www.hydrogencontest.org. The Contest is open to undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D. students worldwide and last year attracted over 30 teams from 10 different countries. This year’s competition focuses on the development of a hydrogen fueling infrastructure in the Northeast United States. In recent years,  several major car manufacturers announced their plans to commercially introduce fuel cell vehicles by 2015. In order to prepare for the upcoming commercialization of fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen production and fueling infrastructures must be planned for and developed across the United States, especially in such densely populated regions such as the northeast.

This is a great opportunity for students to develop real world design experience and in years past has attracted sponsors and judges that represent the leaders in the industry; Department of Energy, Chevron, Honda, Toyota, Ballard Power Systems, Sandia National Laboratories and many more. Furthermore, the competition finalists will get their designs published and have the opportunity to present their design at the 2013 Fuel Cell Seminar and/or similar event. The positive impact of the contest on the students’ lives is best summed up in this Department of Energy article: http://energy.gov/articles/hydrogen-student-design-contest-inspires-and-opens-doors.
