Health Meeting

I am looking for some poster and lecture presenters for the NEHA conference next summer in DC.

Environmental Health includes things like: emergency response/preparedness; land use planning for healthy communities; air quality; healthy homes & schools; drinking water and wastewater treatment; food safety; vector-borne disease such as avian flu & West Nile Virus; environmental sustainability as a health impact,etc.

If you or someone you know does research or work in these areas, please refer them to submit an abstract for the conference. There are opportunities for students, academics, industry and regulatory professionals, and vendors to participate. The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota invites applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position starting in Fall 2013. Applicants at all ranks will be considered. We seek candidates with a strong methodological foundation in Operations Research and a demonstrated interest in applications including, but not limited to, energy and the environment, healthcare and medical applications, transportation and logistics, supply chain management, and service operations. Applicants should also have a strong commitment to teaching, to mentoring graduate students, and to developing and maintaining an active program of sponsored research. Applicants must hold a Ph.D., or expect to complete their degree before Fall 2013, in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Operations Management or a closely related discipline. Senior applicants should have an outstanding track record of research and teaching accomplishments.

Writing Compelling Cover Letters

This workshop will teach attendees how to craft a strategic cover letter.  Participants should bring a job description they want to apply for to aid in the drafting of an effective cover letter.  General information on cover letters will also be discussed.  This workshop is open to undergraduate and graduate students, alumni and postdocs. Practice Makes Perfect: Group Mock Interviews

In this group mock interview session, students will have a unique chance to practice and sharpen their interview skills. We will briefly review interviewing wisdom, discuss the art of giving and receiving feedback, then all participants will have a chance to answer questions and get feedback on their responses. UC Merced invites applications for a ladder-rank faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level in Natural Resource Management of Public Lands and Protected Areas. We seek a distinguished scholar who will provide leadership in establishing a program of international stature within the interdisciplinary area of adaptive management of complex coupled human (legal, administrative, economic, cultural) and natural (ecological, climatic, geologic, hydrologic) systems to sustain native species, ecosystems, and landscapes, and to preserve cultural heritage. We seek a leader in scholarship and practice that addresses lands and resource management broadly in the context of changing global earth systems and governance, including ecosystem services and climate adaptation.

Appropriate candidates will have distinguished research, educational, and leadership experience that emphasizes science, conservation, social science, and/or management. The ideal candidate will bridge science and management, and will lead efforts to develop interdisciplinary research and education programs at UC Merced associated with science, management, and sustainability of public lands and protected areas, such as national parks. The Sierra Nevada Research Institute and other campus units provide excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaboration as well as established collaborations with external stakeholders.

The primary appointment may be in Natural Science, Social Sciences, or Engineering, or may be a joint appointment between schools. The successful candidate is expected to participate actively in the development of innovative, interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programs in the future School of Management, and to contribute to the teaching and mentoring of a diverse student population.

MIT ESL Program for Service Employees

The MIT English as a Second Language Program for Service Employees is looking for volunteers to tutor night shift employees for 1-2 hrs/wk or to serve as substitutes as needed.

No experience is required, just a good command of English and an interest in helping individuals whose first language is not English. The goals of the program are to build student’s confidence, to help them become more productive in their jobs, and to perhaps open up further opportunities for advancement*.*

 

Tutoring takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 pm - midnight beginning September 18.

This is an opportunity to make a real and positive difference.

IBM is pleased to announce the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship program for the 2013-2014 academic year. We have received many outstanding and exceptional candidates from universities all over the world in the past and encourage your participation. IBM Ph.D.  Fellowship nominations may be made by doctoral faculty members from September 20 to October 30, 2012.

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship program honors exceptional Ph.D. students in many academic disciplines and areas of study, for example: computer science and engineering (including cyber security and cloud computing), electrical and mechanical engineering, physical sciences (including chemistry, material sciences, and physics), mathematical sciences (including analytics of massive scale data with uncertainty, operations research, and optimization), public sector and business sciences (including urban policy and analytics, social technologies, learning systems and natural language understanding), and service science, management, and engineering (SSME). Additionally, IBM pays special attention to an array of focus areas of interest to IBM and fundamental to innovation, including but not limited to:

  • Technology that creates new business or social value
    Tools to build smarter cities and a smarter planet, modeling and data analysis, optimization, risk and compliance,  cyber security, urban policy and analytics, tools for globalization, information-based medicine and health care management, service science, management and engineering (SSME)

All supporting documents for the fellowship, such as student's resume, and endorsement by the department head as well as the nominator's recommendation must be included in the nomination form. We ask that each department submit no more than two new nominations (in addition to any existing fellowship nominations to compete for a renewal). In cases of more than one nomination for a fellowship (including competing renewal nominations), the department head's endorsement must include an indication of the relative merits of all the candidates and the department's prioritization of these candidates. Students from Europe and Russia may be nominated in their first year of study in their doctoral program. Outside of Europe and Russia students must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination.  Students from U.S. embargoed countries are not eligible for the program.

IBM University Relations Ph.D. Fellowships are awarded worldwide. IBM Ph.D. Fellows receive a stipend for the academic year 2013-2014. Fellowships vary by country/geographic area and the students will be informed at the time of the award what the value is for their country/geographic area. All IBM Ph.D. Fellows are matched with an IBM Mentor according to their technical interests, and they are strongly encouraged to participate in at least one internship at IBM while completing their studies. While students may accept other supplemental fellowships, to be eligible for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship they may not accept a major award in addition to the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship. Students in Europe and Russia may accept government scholarships and remain eligible for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship.
