Certification allows rocketeers to prove their ability to operate rockets safely so they can fly motors not available to the general public.

History

Originally, the TRA didn't offer a 3 level certification program. In the early days of HPR, they had a "qualification" program instead, where one could fly a G motor to gain the ability to buy any motor available at the time, ranging to 98mm M motors. At the time, the NAR was opposed to HPR and did not allow HPR flights at their launches.

CAR certification is not particularly relevant to the team, so other pages on this wiki will not reference it.

Tips

Certifications are reciprocal between the NAR and TRA, so gaining a level through one organization will get you the same level with the other as long as you send them proof.
The NAR will keep track of your certification level even if your membership expires, so you can "lock in" your cert level by either doing it through the NAR or transferring your TRA certification. That way, if you ever miss your dues or leave the hobby for time, you can rejoin and get your certs back for both organizations without having to redo the certification flights.
