General Updates

• Conference room (33-218) our general body meeting location moving forward
• The Mezzanine will be our new ETHER workspace. We will have a corner of the room dedicated to Satellite Team with storage, a TV, and a few tables.
• For IAP and Spring semester, we will have an official space
• We also have conference room booking priority

MIT Mission

• We have decided that we are moving forward with a data correlation SmallSat with sensor(s) and an imager to research a correlation between some data variables. This imager could also be something like a thermal camera.
• We still need to choose a name for this project!
• The satellite will be 3U or 6U in size, and we hope to find something that the team cares about and find a way to implement a related idea using our satellite.
• We also want to be able to publish what we are doing and become a resource for others to reference
• We hope to launch within a year and a half, and the satellite can continue taking data for as long as it is operational.
• So, what will we use the imager/sensor(s) to measure?
  • Ideas from previous meetings:
    • Light pollution v. temperature
    • Light pollution v. animal population / biodiversity loss
    • Light pollution v. wildfires
    • Light pollution v. sleep and human health
    • Measuring whether groups working to stop light pollution are succeeding in doing so
  • Ideas suggested at this meeting:
    • Urban planning (eg. infrastructure planning)
    • Agriculture
    • Water quality
    • Spectral imaging
    • Forestry
    • Natural disasters
    • Global warming
      • Mapping regions to air pollution/presence of certain greenhouse gases

    • "The other way" - pointing the camera into outer space instead

  • For each idea, a small group has been assigned to gather information about this idea. Everybody should have notes and/or slides (~5-6 slides) ready to send to the rest of the team by next weekend (November 23rd)
  • These notes should specifically include:
    • Feasibility: Keep in mind that this is our first full satellite mission, and we want this mission to succeed to establish the club's significance both at MIT and in the world
      • Sensors required
      • Accuracy required
      • Technical complexity
      • Cost
      • Size (should be 6U or less)
      • Mass
    • Why this project would be interesting
  • There were a few unclaimed projects. Nobody is currently assigned to present these, but feel free to pick them up if you're interested!
