Objectives:

  • Have items packed in u-haul night before
  • Have u-haul full with gas
• Conduct full dry run of system before the hot fire
  • Gives us time to work out all the issues and ensure the newly added features work properly

Testing Log:

Begin Testing Log for the 3rd Osiris Hotfire Attempt

• 12:30 pm; Spark plug test: Failure
• 12:31 pm;  Test to see if arc can be created between spark plug wires: Failure
• Assumption was made if the alligator clips caused the error. Took off the alligator clips from the wires connecting to the spark plug
• 12:32 pm; Tested ability to generate electric arc with no alligator clips on the wires: Success.
• 12:35 pm; New alligator clips were attached and another arc test was initiated: Failure.
• 12:40 pm; Testing again for an arc with no alligator clips: Success
• Decision to attempt to use cables provided by test site personnel.
• 12:43 pm: Testing using site provided cables: Failure
• Theory is that the resistance may be too high as the site provided cables are long. 
• The decision was made to cut the site provided cables. 
• 12:44 pm: Arc test using cut cables: Failure:
• 12:44 pm: Second arc test using the same set up: Success but a very underpowered arc.
• The thought was that the wires may still be too long. Because of this reason that they were cut further
• 12:50 pm: Another arc test: Failure
• The wires were cut further.
• 12:51 pm: Another arc test: Success, not exactly what we want but more than before.
• We decided to implement a new firing system, where we would attempt an arc, wait 250ms and then attempt another arc.
• 12:52 pm: A test using updated arc procedure: Success
• Time delay dropped to 50ms
• 12:55 pm: Shorter time delay test: Success.
• These wires were then connected back to the spark plug.
• 12:58 pm: Spark plug test: Weak sparks.
• Moved coil up closer to spark. Alligator clips reconnected as we do not believe them to be the clause of the error. 
• 1:09 pm: Test Spark: Failure.
• Wires were swapped in the positive and negative terminals.
• 1:10 pm: Spark was tested again: Failure, papyrus system completely reset?
• Checked the spark plug and assessed that It was not the clause of failure. Wires were unattached from the spark plug.
• 1:13 pm: Two wires were tested for arc: Failure
• The decision was made to make the board closer to the coil. Placed on top of the gimbal.
• 1:16; Arc test with coils and board next to each other: Success.
• Alligator clips were placed on the spark region.
• 1:19 pm: Spark Plug Test: Success
• 1:20 pm: Second spark plug test, same set up: Success
• ASI Test prep begins after this.
• 1:25 pm: ASI test start: Success
• 1:28 pm: Begin hotfire prep:
• Chamber was reattached and assembled
• 1:37 pm: Begin hotfire purge:
• All purge procedures following the SOP were followed, no errors during purge were observed. 
• 1:57 pm: Hotfire purge was completed.
• 2:03 pm: Began the camera set up.
• 2:09 pm: Dry ignition run purge:
• 2:11 pm: Dry ignition run: Success
• 2:12 pm: Second dry ignition run: Success
• 2:16 pm: Began fill of 1 gallon of IPA
• 2:18 pm: Finished IPA fill
• 2:22 pm: Record of Current Temperature as directed by Test Administrator: 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
• 2:23 pm: Start of first hotfire attempt
• All processes occurred as according to the 3rd hotfire SOP with the exception of the issues recorded. Also included are important steps as indicated by the test administrator.
• 2:27 pm: regulator set to 2100 psi, minor leak detected, (decision was made to not fix).
• 2:29 pm: all clear from the stand for NMV1 open.
• 2:30 pm: NFV1 opens
• 2:33 pm: level psi at 1700 and NFV1 closes
• 2:34 pm: OPR1 to 660 psi
• 2:36 pm: FPR1 to 550 psi
• 2:39 pm: OKV1 set to open
• 2:40 pm: Leak on gox hose detected, Individual responsible for manual valve opening was moved to the control room for safety.
• 2:42 pm: Oxidizer fill valve on for 90 sec
• 2:45 pm: Ox fill closed, filled for 5 sec past desired time
• 2:46 pm: FVV to on, Fuel press valve to on.
• The team is unsure if isoline is pressurized, unsure of how to measure this.
• 2:47 pm: Ignition begins: Failure, team lead thinks that only gas came out of the system.
• Fire time reduced from 4 to 2 seconds, time gap from spark plug fire and valve opening changed to 500ms
• 2:50 pm: The decision has been made to attempt to fire with the modified procedures.
• 2:50 pm: Second test fire Ignition: Failure several small bursts of fire, long plumes of gas between bursts.
• Decision was made that we are likely low on pressure and fuel, decision was made to reset system:
• 2:53 pm: Safe system declared. 
• 3:01 pm: Purge begins for press valves.
• 3:06 pm: Discussion: Better with large prop lead, IPA ran out on the second fire as to current best guess. 
• 3:20 pm: Decision has been made to look at data on the SD card.
• 3:37 pm: Found that we are getting far less pressure than we would have liked. 
• 3:50 pm: Modification to set the ox valve to 750 psi and the fuel valve to 650 psi for further testing.
• 4:12 pm: Third hotfire sequence begins.
• All processes occurred as according to the 3rd hotfire SOP with the exception of the issues recorded. Also included are important steps as indicated by the test administrator.
• 4:27 pm: During the procedure following OPR1 to 750 psi and FPR1 to 650 psi it was determined that the gox will be opened last to conserve it due to the previously observed leak.
• 4:29 pm: A spark plug test was initiated during the firing procedure: Success
• Note was made by control personnel to not have anyone down range during the manual valve openings.
• 4:35 pm: Ignition Program Check:
• 4:36 pm: Ignition Test: Failure
• 4:39 pm: Something was venting very fast, it was determined by data that we were losing significant amounts of nitrogen.
• 4:41 pm: Still venting but significantly less
• 4:49 pm: Venting has stopped and safe of the system has been completed.
