KSM's Users - They were a couple whose children are one and three years old. The mother was familiar with computers, but does not use them as much as she would like. She relies more on the father to do this. However he has some of the same troubles as her. They use a combo of a camera and an iphone to record moments. They prefer to use the camera because they are able to upload these photos to their computer in one easy step where all the photos are organized chronologically in folders. However they do like using the iphone because this allows them to share with family members anytime they want through a simple text. Otherwise photos are not shared until family get togethers where people just scroll through their camera. The father and mother are opposed to putting photos of their kids on facebook, because they feel it floods people with unwanted media. They also wish that they were able to share more of their moments with family members.
JDH’s Users - They were a couple whose children are teenagers and older. The dad was tech savvy. He had a decent camera and was primarily responsible for taking pictures and video using that. The mom, while not necessarily bad with technology, stated she relied on on the dad to access digital pictures taken on the camera. Perhaps most interestingly, they stated that they consistently share pictures with both friends and family on a daily basis, through texting or email. Additionally, the mom strongly expressed that she wished she had taken more video of her children when they were younger for posterity.
JCH’s Users - The guy I interviewed was a software engineer in his 40s. He has 2 kids ages 6 and 8. He uses a camera about once a week and takes video of his kids once a month for special occasions. He uploads all of his pictures to his computer and just keeps them in folders; because he’s very experienced, he can easily find them, but he said that others often have trouble finding files they upload. He personally doesn’t share content, as his wife does all of that, and he doesn’t think their content is relevant to other people. They share pictures of their kids mostly on Facebook, but are not familiar enough with privacy settings to bother with restricting who they share with. He thought a good idea for viewing pictures was to see them randomly (e.x. a screensaver), and when an interesting one appears, be able to click and see related pictures.
PAT's Users - The first group that I interviewed were the grandparents of one and had three children of their own. The grandfather was in charge of taking pictures, and distributing them primarily through email. They shared and received pictures almost daily with close relatives. While the grandfather was comfortable with mainly digital copies and looking at them on his computer, the grandmother greatly preferred handling and viewing printed copies of the pictures. They don't share media through a social networking site because they would rather remain private to most people except close family. They also are concerned with the privacy of such sites and who would have access to their content. However, they had used Dropbox before and stated a feature they liked was that they could select who they shared it with and if that person was allowed to share it.
-I also had a chance to interview the mother of a 10 month old. The mother distributes photos or videos daily taken with close relatives through email. She wishes she could see more content of her family, but not more of people in general. She has a person Facebook account, but does not post any pictures of her daughter because too many people would have access to it. She is extremely concerned about privacy. For her to feel comfortable sharing pictures of her daughter over the internet, she would need to have access to a password protected page that could not be googled, and would like it if if there were ways to control who could see these photos without being able to share the content with others.
-Both the grandparents and the mother I interviewed said that sharing and retrieving these memories were extremely important to them. For the mother, she anticipates going back to look at them. For the grandparents, they view family as the most important aspect of their life and want to remain close. They think sharing content achieves this.
