Design

Our design is centered on helping users with ADHD focus on reading long articles. There are two main parts of our user interface:
 * Breaking down the large article into chunks for the reader to focus on. This happens in what we refer to as “Focus Mode”

Observations

Usability

User 1

  • Worked well, he read every chunk and summarized the article well
  • However, he kept cycling back and forth through chunks
  • He said it would have been hard to read the article without chunking because there was a lot going on. Also liked that chunks were like bullet points. Also said that chunks being small made it harder to miss information, which happens to him usually.
  • Liked Focus on Selection part
  • Didn’t notice focus button immediately but did eventually
  • Enlarging pictures was a problem
  • Didnt read text in sidebar; so didnt know how to add links to sidebar

User 2

  • Found Focus Button early, figured out stuff pretty quickly
  • Tried it out on wikipedia was excited that it worked well
  • Was happy with the Sidebar popping out when clicking on links in focus mode
  • Preferred to do “Focus on Selection” by selecting area and then clicking on Focus button rather than right-click
  • Blake, similar to Vivaek, clicked and highlighted text as he was reading - even within chunks - can we incorporate that into future iterations
  • Seemed focused while reading
  • Blake loved the focus, he could sit and read any article chunk by chunk
  • Sometimes, he went out of focus to find “big concepts” that he was trying to glean from the article
  • Likes the chunk size
  • Would like to queue up chunks & text in the Sidebar
  • Harder to get high-level overview of article, especially when looking for specific words in the text. Would like a list of words that get highlighted inthe article that show up in chunks so he knows to focus on those.

User 3

  • Figured out things pretty quickly.
  • Thought it was intuitive, liked the basic nature of the Help option
  • Was happy that the side bar moved
    • Popping out when focus started
    • Moving when links are added
    • Minimizing when chunking began
  • Said he remembered more of the text than he normally would.
  • Really liked the chunk size
  • Would have liked colors, but noticed they might clash with some websites
  • Wished it was functional on more pages
  • Wished he could have similar functionality with picures

Reflection

We intend to do some more long-term testing with a few of our Users and eventually put the extension on the Chrome Web Store.
