Dear Second-Year MBAs, 

 

We've heard—from you, from recent graduates, from recruiters, from our friends in business, from others—how important it is for you to be effective at turning ideas into high-level action. We've also heard how valuable it is for our graduates, already known for their smarts and accomplishments, to be able to present and frame their learning, experience, and skills in effective action. 

 

Effective action, is of course, key to the making of a manager (or leader, entrepreneur, or change agent). You know this, of course—that's why hundreds of of you are signing up for our <A href="https://wikis.mit.edu/confluence/display/praxis/Seminars">
Practicing Management Seminar Series</A>
. And we expect the interest in our <A href="https://wikis.mit.edu/sloan/praxis">
praxis@MIT Sloan</A>
 webspace to build, too, as we add content and materials for self-study. But we write to you today about an opportunity to go even further to connect action and learning in our flagship course on the science, art, and practice of effective action. 

 

Now, you're already busy taking all sorts of action, in classes, in extracurricular projects, and otherwise. But are you making the most of these opportunities? Are you drawing on the frameworks, research, and data that could benefit your planning, action steps, and analysis? Are you developing your own personal style, gaining self-knowledge, and learning from great practitioners? And are you putting it all into use to build skills while examining your experience so that you can learn from it? 

 

If not, you're missing a unique opportunity to use the prepare-act-reflect model to guide your learning about all three aspects of effective action—science, art, and practice. You've told us that you'd like more opportunities to link what you do outside the classroom with what you're learning in your classes. Here's a chance to do so in the guided setting of a course that centers on a project of your own choosing. Projects may include those for clubs, student government or some other domain.
