Social media mission statement
The MIT Libraries promote discovery and enable learning and advancement of knowledge at MIT.
Content ideas
Twitter ~ once a day at http://twitter.com/mitlibraries. Content ideas:
- tweet a photo and ask people to "Name that library!"
- tweet about or take a photo of cool collections people like (tweet a photo of yearbooks and send link to Barton record; tweet about travel collection)
- tweet about MIT spotlights and lib resources for them
- tweet about our good video tutorials
- tweet about Ellen's podcast series
- tweet about server downtime and other real time events
- ask users questions or what they think?
- tell people things they wouldn't have known otherwise
- our recent survey showed that people don't know about XXX service, did you?
- frame things in terms of user needs and how we can help them
- twitter new LibGuides
- twitter some cool photos that we have on Flickr
- twitter about our staff and what they do (non-work)
- Possibly twitter about other depts. at MIT and what they are doing
Things to try if we have the time:

- Ifttt.com
- Hootsuite (Stephanie's testing)
- Tweetdeck (Remlee & Stephanie are testing)

Stats
Ways to track stats on followers & tweets: (from http://andyburkhardt.com/2009/09/28/how-to-track-your-librarys-social-media-stats/
Bit.ly - we use this actively to make shortcut links anyway.
- stats by referrer (facebook, QR code, libraries.mit.edu, etc.)
- country
- # of clicks per day
- # of links we created by day
- # of FB shares, tweets, likes, comments
Doesn’t give time of day; doesn’t break it down easily by day of the week.
You enter your username, it takes a little time, and then it gives you: http://tweetstats.com/graphs/mitlibraries#tstats:
- Tweets per hour
- Tweets per month
- Tweets per day of the week
- Tweet timeline
- Reply statistics
Shows graph of # of followers and # of tweets each day, but the number of tweets is wrong for us anyway. There are more things you can get if you pay, but it doesn’t sound worth it.
