Why provide a project sponsor update?

Because project sponsors have limited time to be actively involved in a project, but have the ability to make decisions and remove roadblocks. It is the responsibility of the project manager to communicate with a project sponsor the project health, status of deliverables, risks and issues that need attention and action.

What to Include in the Project Sponsor Report:
  1. Overall Status - Green (on plan), yellow (Needs attention), red (In trouble)
  2. Project Summary - brief description of project, current state and overall health
  3. Executive Attention - List of items requiring review and action by the Sponsor
  4. Accomplishments - list of accomplishments for current phase since last sponsor report
  5. Upcoming milestones - key tasks and activities planned until next sponsor meeting
  6. Issues - list of issues and proposed resolution if any
  7. Risks - list of risks and strategy for addressing each risk (accept, mitigate, transfer, )
