006 Additional Material Characteristics
– 006 is to be used if the item is accompanied by material of a different format. Or it is used to code characteristics of item not encoded in the Fixed Field.
– The whole field contains 18 characters (00-17). OCLC Connexion Client bib record shows the spaces/characters without any codes as blanks.
– For example: Colored maps on CD-ROM
006 m--------c-f------
007 a $b j $d c $e a $f n $g z $h n
300 1 CD-ROM : $b col. ; $c 4 ¾ in.
The “---“ in the above example actually are shown as blank spaces in OCLC bib record. Even after “f” there are 6 more blank spaces before getting to the end of the field. If these blank spaces are not entered. Validation will fail and update of the bib cannot be completed.
007 Physical Description Fixed Field – 007 is to code the physical characteristics of the item. It is also used to code the physical characteristics of the item’s accompanying material if it is of a different format.
