Design

Explanation

Design 1:

This design is aimed for simplicity.  Users may access the site via 2 portals: parent portal and teacher portal.  The overall layout of the site is similar for both kinds of users: links to different pages appear on the left panel and notification buttons appear on the upper right corner.  On each page other than Home page, there is a trace at the top that indicates how the user got here.

Once the user signs in, they are first brought to the Home, or Welcome, page, where new messages/forms/conversations will appear.   There is redundancy of information here (since both the notifications and the main screen will direct to the same new messages/forms/conversations).  However, I do this to allow the user to easily spot the new information, whether through notification buttons or links, so that they can be directed to the page efficiently.

For our scenario, where a parent needs to sign a permission slip, there is a Description box that states a short description of the document, and a viewer that displays the full contents of the permission slip.  At the very bottom, the parent can check the box and sign electronically using a PIN.  On the teacher’s side, he/she can see that forms have been submitted and how many of them have been submitted.

Design 2:

This design is aimed for small screens.  It has a similar idea to Design 1.  After the users sign in, they first see new items that need their attention, and underneath the new items are the links to different pages such as Grades, Forms, and Conversations.

Design 3:

This design is aimed for parents with a variety of English skills.  Instead of forcing them to read and understand all of the information in English, it allows them to choose their native language.  The layout for this design is also different from the previous designs.  The main navigation is at the top instead of on the side.  The side panel contains quick links, language selector, and child selector (for parents with more than one child in school).  On the home page, there is a section devoted to new items, and various sections beneath it that give quick glances to various sections such as Grades, Forms, and Conversations.
