Response to User Testing and Heuristic Feedback
We chose to allow for this functionality on any page, rather than having dedicated web pages for these actions because we require minimal information from the user and it seems like less of a hurdle for the user if they are not navigated away.

Users are not allowed to interact with site pages other than Home and About unless they are logged in. A message replaces the content and gives them a means to either log in or register a new account.

Response to User Testing and Heuristic Feedback
Originally we allowed users to see the content, but wouldn't let them perform actions that required identification (eg donating a toy or messaging another user). This was problematic, however, because a user might go through all of the steps of donation or toy finding before finding out that they need to make an account, which could be a deterrent.
