Problem Statement

A sample illustration. Your problem statement doesn't need to be illustrated, but later group assignments will require sketches and screenshots.

Every term, students need to pick courses that satisfy certain goals and requirements, such as

  • helping accumulate appropriate credits toward major or minor degree programmes (e.g., fulfilling the Technical Qualifying Examination for grad students in course VI),
  • building background knowledge required for specific research interests
  • satisfying personal curiosity and interests (e.g., taking a foreign language class).

In addition to juggling these goals and requirements, students must also make their choices based on

  • the schedules of the courses to ensure no conflict,
  • the load of the courses,
  • personal criteria such as "no final exam"

The MIT course catalog only offers flat lists of course descriptions (e.g., Economics courses). Each student must do tedious accounting to keep track of various potential combinations of courses.

Project Goal: Help students more efficiently and effectively pick courses (offered at MIT) that satisfy their goals, requirements, and criteria by offering a user interface better designed for that task.
