Obtaining a book with a status of "On Order":

Email monoacq@mit.edu. Include the title, author, and order number (i.e., as much useful information as you can get out of Barton), and the user's contact information. Request it as a rush order, and that the user information be added to the record.

Obtaining a book with a status of "Received/Not Yet Available":

These books fall into two categories — those with a call number, and those without.

If the book DOES have a call number, it has already moved out of Cataloging, and should be somewhere in or between Preservation Services and the library.* Check the ACME binding list to see if the book has been sent out for binding. If it is on the list, it can be expected back in the local library several days after the date listed next to the book. Place a hold on the item for the patron.

  • If it is not on the list, call Preservation Services (3-5282) and ask them to look for the requested item. Giving them the physical description can help them locate the item. It is usually sitting on a truck, awaiting its call number.
  • If Preservation Services staff do not find it, odds are the book will arrive in the local library in a day or two. Place a hold on the book for the patron. Refer this to a local Processing person who can keep an eye out for the book.
If the book DOES NOT have a call number: * Contact Collection Services to perform a book search using the book search form: http://libstaff.mit.edu/colserv/bksearch/. Be sure to fill out:
    • Your email
    • Title
    • Author
    • Receipt date (please be sure this is the receipt date, not the order date). Look in the Order Log found in the Acquisitions Module for this information.
    • In "Other Notes," add "Please rush and add patron information." Include the patron information (name and email is usually sufficient). If you have an Aleph ID number you can put that in too.
  • Put a hold on the item for the patron.
