Access to Digital SAE Technical Papers

Content

The Society for Automotive Engineers has been the primary publisher of technical reports in many areas of mobility and automotive engineering and transportation engineering. Full text papers from SAE meetings in the most recent year (2006) include papers from:  the 24th Annual Brake Colloquium and Exhibition; Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress and Exhibition; Digital Human Modeling Symposium; Future Transportation Technology Conference; International Conference on Environmental Systems; Powertrain and Fluid Systems Conference and Exhibition; SAE 2006 World Congress and Exhibition; Small Engine Technology Conference. Approximately 40% of the content is contributed by academic researchers, with the balance produced by industry.

Size

Between 2500-3000 per year (currently 9000), with collection expected to grow at 3000 per year. Over a 20-year time frame the number of papers would be between 50,000 - 60,000.

Age

2004, 2005, and 2006 are owned by MIT. Digital content is available for purchase from 1994 to date.

Rights

MIT Libraries license with SAE does not restrict storing the PDF files on the MIT Intranet.  We do not have the right to publish these outside MIT.

Anticipated Audience

Faculty, students, and researchers at MIT, principally from the Sloan Automotive Lab; MIT Media Lab; Mechanical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Aero/Astro.

Benefits

(1) Archival: SAE does not participate in Portico or a similar digital archiving effort.(2) Access:  provide much easier access via networked access across the MIT domain, rather than using the Citirx server to access the CD-ROMs.  (3) Advance scholarly communication, by opening up opportunities to establish a related, federated technical paper repository for academic work in this field.  Given the lack of responsiveness by SAE to academic communication and information needs, it is proposed that this project be phase I, with phase II the development of a DSpace-platform collection of open access mobility technical papers.

Format Risk

Minimal - all files are PDF.

Format

All are PDF files.  Abstracts and metadata format are TBD.

Metadata

Under investigation.  The SAE CD-ROM product includes a database pf abstracts and bibliographic data, but access to this information (and rights) to this are TBD.
