How to insert a link on a wiki page

  • Open your browser of choice (Firefox or Internet Explorer)
  • Access the MIT Wikis Dashboard
  • Select Libraries Monograph Cataloging
    • Consider bookmarking this page for ease of access at later dates
  • Navigate to the page in which you plan to add a link
    • For the purposes of this training, we will use Cataloging work-supply as an example
  • Click the Edit button in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

  • An editing pane will open, defaulting to the Rich Text tab.
    • Ignore the text found at the top of the page, from “Monograph Cataloging Documentation through "column:width=68%." DO NOT EVER MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THIS TEXT! It sets the parameters of the page and should be left alone.

  • Highlight the text that you would like to convert into a link, then click on the link button on the toolbar (it looks like a linked chain)

  • Note: the word(s) highlighted should reflect the location of the link, such as “Cataloging work-supply” to link to the cataloging work-supply page or “SERMs” to link to the SERMs documentation. In our example, I am using the word “Link.”
  • A dialog box will open prompting you to “insert link.”
  • To link out to an outside webpage, type or paste the URL in the LINK field

  • To link to another wiki page within the Libraries Monograph Cataloging wiki site, type LIBMONODOC:XXX with the name of the target page in the place of XXX.

  • Hint: You may also use the blue buttons below the fields of the INSERT LINK box to locate the desired wiki page, using SEARCH to search for the items, HISTORY to find pages you recently viewed, and RECENTLY MODIFIED to select a page you recently edited.
  • After you have typed or pasted your URL in the LINK field, click OK.
  • To preview your page, choose the Preview tab.

  • When you have finished adding the link, click the Save button in the lower right-hand corner.

  • After clicking save, you will see the final page. Click the link you inserted to ensure that it works.
