NBERs

National Bureau of Economic Research working papers, referred to as “NBERs,” are SERMs that are handled specially by copy-catalogers because of the great frequency with which they are published and because a macro is used to facilitate their cataloging. The macro is named “nbersrch” and is located in the macro book “new_cbc.”

The macro was created because, once a cataloger enters the working paper series number, this number can be used:

  1. for a series keyword search
  2. to provide the correct number for the classed together call number and for the piggyback URL to the PDF version.

The macro also does some rote editing of other fields related to the series and e-version.

This is how the macro works:

— Check if a session is logged on, and if not, initiate a login.Prompt for a series number, then run a search on 'nber' and 'working' and 'paper' and the series number (this text may be adjusted from time to time if the catalog copy changes in a discernible trend).
— If a list of records is returned, ask the user to identify the one to use.
— Delete all instances of 440, 490, 530, 830 and 856.
— Add 099, 440, 530, 830, 856, 006, 007, and 949 fields

Special handling

These SERMs usually arrive in batches of 10-20.

Next day procedure: Unlike other books, which go to Jane for next day shelflisting and quality control, copy-catalogers check these themselves.
