General Waste

Alexandria collects general waste from grey bins both in the lab and in the offices and Tea Room.  No contaminated material.

Recycling

Non-Lab - Alexandria collects most recyclables from blue bins The do not take newspapers or glass.

Lab - MIT has a pilot program to recycle pipette tip boxes and wafers. Roger is doing this.  Other lab materials, even if they are uncontaminated, can not be recycled.

Compost

Alexandria is collecting food waste in the green bin in the Tea Room. Compostable paper such as paper towels and paper food containers can also be put in the green bin.  No plastics, including paper food containers with plastic liners.

Biowaste

Biowaste boxes should be moved to the end of 265, next to the freezers, when full.  They will be picked up from there, and replaced with empty boxes.  Do not expect pick-up from areas spread through the lab.

Chemical Waste

The lab SAA is in the hood in 265.  Please follow the rules from "Managing Hazardous Chemical Waste" training.  If you have questions, ask your Lab Manager.  You can date full containers and request pick up (Atlas > EHS Waste Management > Chemical Waste Collection), or you can wait for Ky to do it.  Do not date a container if you have not requested pick up.

Sharps

Clean Broken or Unbroken Glass - put in a cardboard box, label it "Clean Glass" and put it out in the hall for Alexandria.  There is a box near the dishwashing kitchen.  Glass chemical bottles should be triple rinsed and put in the box.

Contaminated Broken or Unbroken Glass, Needles, Toothpicks, etc - Put in a sharps container, Red for Biological and White for chemical.  If your contaminated glass is too large, contact Ky.  Place full Red container in Biowaste bin. Label White container on red tag, and put in SAA.

Tech Trash

Tech trash is collected in the elevator lobby.  Cammie or Ky gets it picked up.

Batteries

There is a white bin outside of 257. Tape the terminals of all batteries.
