Information I need from you

In order to install a beta version of iOS on your iPhone or Ipad, I need to register your Unique Device Identifier also known as (UDID) with Apple's Developer Portal. To find your UDID, you can either....

  1. Download an App (there are numerous UDID apps, I'd suggest UDID Tool. Send the UDID to me at ####@mit.edu.

    or

  2. Plug your iPhone or Ipad into your machine and open up iTunes. When iTunes open, navigate to your iPhone or Ipad page where it displays name, capacity, phone number, serial. Click on Serial and it should change to UDID, right click on the UDID, and select Copy Identifier (UDID). Paste it into an email message and send it to ####@mit.edu.

    For example:
  3. Your UDID should look something like this: 7f6c8dc83d77134b5a3a1c53f1202b395b04482b

It's very important that this number is complete and correct. Please double-check prior to sending it to me. DO NOT attempt to install iOS 8 beta on your iPhone until I reply back to you confirming I've registered your UDID.

  4. Important: For the IPad you will also need to send the model number, This is engraved on the back of the iPad in small letters under "iPad". We want to make sure that this is Wi-Fi only or if it includes cellular, which carrier.

Before installing iOS 8 Beta

  1. Backup your iPhone, everything you can't live without! If you're using iTunes for your backup, plug your iPhone into iTunes and do a complete backup. If you have pictures/movies (recorded movies) on your iPhone, make sure to also back those up to your machine. If you're using iCloud for backup, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > and select Back Up Now. Content such as music (both locally on your computer and from iTunes), ringtones, and Apps will need to be resynchronized after installing iOS 8.
  2. Update your iTunes Update to the latest version of iTunes available to your machine. The latest build for Mac and PC is 11.0.4.
  3. There's no going back to iOS 7 once you've updated to iOS 8. There's no officially supported downgrade process from Apple. With major build updates like iOS 7 to iOS 8, generally there are baseband updates to the device that are permanent and thus cannot be restored to a previous version. This is your chance to back out, prior to installing.
  4. This is beta so behavior of both iOS and 3rd party App are TBD but expect the unexpected. Some apps may not work, some may crash, random reboots are to be expected. Your battery may drain faster, your iPhone may feel warmer, all are totally normal beta-ish behaviors that I've experienced in the past. App developers are just getting their hands on iOS 8 now as well so they still need to update their apps to be compatible. In the past 24hrs I've been running iOS 8 on my iPhone 5, it's randomly crashed/rebooted about 5 times.

What's New in iPhone iOS 8: HERE

  • Over-the-air available via iOS Software Update.

WARNING: DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT try to install on another device or distribute the beta builds to others. During the installation process, iTunes will cross-reference the device's UDID with the Apple Developer portal, if the device is not registered, the device will be bricked. What level of bricked is TBD but please do not. I'm not responsible for a temporary or permanent paperweight. If you have another iOS 7 compatible device you want to test with, let me know, send me the UDID and we can make it official.

How to install iOS 8 Beta

  1. Assuming you've already backed up your iPhone as mentioned above, you've downloaded the appropriate version of iOS 8 for your iPhone, I've told you your device is registered, proceed to unpacking/mounting the beta image by double-clicking on the .dmg file.
  2. Plug your iPhone into your computer and open iTunes.
  3. Open the iPhone page in iTunes. Hold down Option (on your Mac keyboard; hold down Shift if on Windows) and click on Restore iPhone.... Now select the .ipsw beta file within the mounted dmg and select Open. Allow the restore to complete.
  4. After the restore has completed and the iPhone has reconnected to iTunes, restore from a backup, if you desire.

If you're using iTunes for backup, choose the Restore Backup... option in iTunes. Select the backup you created prior to installing the iOS 8 beta. This will restore your iPhone information. If you're using iCloud for backup, use the Restore from iCloud Backup option after iOS 8 installation is complete and the device reboots into iOS 8.
