Over the late spring and early summer of 2014, devastating floods swept across the western Balkan region (particularly Bosnia and Serbia), with rainfall heavier than it had been for the 120 years of previous records. The floods resulted from the activity of a low-pressure system, the cyclone Tamara, whose centre passed directly over the region. The area, which has a temperate continental climate, ordinarily sees little severe weather, making the flooding of 2014 all the more unexpected.
