Detection of very weak radio sources requires a radiometer capable of very high gain while introducing very little internal noise. Super heterodyne receiving systems are ideally suited for this application. Two versions of the receiver have been developed for the SRT. The original radiometer designed for the SRT is a "phasing type" single sideband scanning receiver. The newer receiver uses digital technology with a 8-bit analog to digital down converter (AD9283) digital downconverter GC1011A and Motorola 56F803 digital signal processor (DSP). In both cases the receiver and the low noise amplifier are mounted at the feed of the antenna. The receivers controlled remotely using a STAMP microprocessor and RS-232 communications.

Electronic Noise Calibrator

An electronic noise calibrator has been developed for use with the Small Radio Telescope. It is designed to replace the vane calibrator now in use and to calibrate quickly and efficiently and in conditions problematic to the vane.
