A number of our servers are in or are in the process of moving to colocation space in the W91 machine room.  There are actually two distinct services offered by OIS, "Colocation" (we maintain) and "Server Management" (for production services; they maintain), and we have machines in each.

Our internal administrative contact for routine maintenance requests for these machines is Hunter Heinlen; a number of team members are on the list for physical access to the W91 machine room.  For managed servers, it's still useful to have requests routed through Hunter, but ASST does all of the dirty work.

Colocation:

DOST colo page: <http://web.mit.edu/ist/services/backup/colocation.html>

Machines under collocation contract:

  • ISDA Software Test Server, CILANTRO.MIT.EDU (previously ZESTDEV1)
  • Project Minerva Storage Servers, AL-FRESCO.MIT.EDU and AL-DENTE.MIT.EDU
  • ZIPS Virtual Server Farm, COBWEBS.MIT.EDU (previously PUDDING-FARM)
  • Athena build servers (sunburn downy kenmore maytag snuggle)
  • SDIT gforge/trac project tracking server (gforget) (likely to be decommissioned or repurposed)

 Managed Servers:

ASST Server Management page: <http://windsurf.mit.edu/>

 Machines under server management contract:

  • Web Services development, test, and production servers (finnigan-fen, isda-ws1, isda-ws2)
  • isda-thalia-1 (Thalia development server)
  • isda-thalia-2-3-4 (initial Thalia production servers)

Other Servers:

  • WebSSO test server (foonalagoona): not quite sure of status; is in W91

How to set up new Colo machines:

The short form is, "fill out the Colo questionnaire linked to above and mail it to DOST.  Then, give them hardware."  Some notes on this process and how to answer the questions:

  • DOST wants the questionnaire filled in and returned as a Microsoft Word document, not plaintext.
  • The billing contact for ISDA machines is generally Holly Bickle.  The cost center to which to bill the charges varies widely, though; ask Catherine what to use.
  • We've been buying the new Dell servers with basic 5x10 hardware support.
  • Our standard physical access list is: amb, dracus, ghudson, iannuzzo, rbasch, with zips as a general email contact for the machines and Catherine as a phone contact.

When you've done that, add the machine to the list here.
