The Aurora motor was retained using forward and aft retention rings. The forward retention ring was comprised of two components. The inner portion of the FRR sat inside the motor case, preventing the motion of the forward closure. The outer portion of the FRR was bolted through the airframe and inner portion of the FRR, centering the motor in the airframe. The aft retention ring was designed to bolt through the motor case and nozzle carrier, eliminating the need for extra bolts. It was also designed to match with the boattail on the nozzle carrier, transitioning between the airframe and nozzle.

Requirements

  1. Connect the motor to the mission package tube
  2. Hold the forward closure in place
  3. Withstand forces with a FoS of at least 2
    1. (forces on bottom face? forces on lip? depends on design choices, mass above frr, and bolt selection/pattern)
    2. From ppt:
      1. Withstand F_up upward force (on bottom face)
      2. Withstand F_down downward force (on lip)
