h4. Research Description:
Since the phasing out of the High Density Rule, effective January 1, 2007, access to major commercial airports in the US has been weakly constrained. This largely unregulated demand combined with capacity constraints led to record-high delays in 2007. Significant reductions in flight delays in the US can be achieved through reductions in imbalances between demand and capacity at the busiest airports.
Alex is developing an integrated framework for airport congestion mitigation. At the tactical level, he optimizes the utilization of airport capacity, _i.e. _, the dynamic allocation of available capacity to arriving and departing flights, in order to minimize congestion costs. At the strategic level, he designs schedule coordination measures that aim at reducing peak-hour scheduling levels in order to reduce anticipated delays. Alex investigate the impacts of schedule coordination on airlines' scheduling strategies and operation profits as well as on airport congestion.
