Sustainer - Nose Cone Structures

Purpose

 The Nose Cone holds the recovery soft good and gives the forward end of the rocket an aerodynamic profile to reduce drag.

Requirements

Design

The tip of the Nose Cone is separate from the body, and it attached using a bolt and custom washer as shown in the diagram below:

In order to be able to withstand the heat from air friction during launch, the tip is made of 316 stainless steel (check on that).

The Nose Cone shape follows a Von Karmen profile. The tip extends this profile and ends in a spherical point. 

Manufacturing

TBD - waiting to return to campus

The plan is to use ... Nose Cone body will be COTS, ans will therefore not require manufacturing. The components in the tip are custom and will be machined on the lathe.
