The School of Industrial Engineering is one of the longest-established IE Schools in Europe, with a strong presence in the international research and education community, especially in the field of Operations Management and Operations Research. OM and OR are at the core of the undergraduate IE program. The graduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Operations Management & Logistics attract top-level students from all over the world. Researchers in the School are member of the Beta research school and participate in industrial activities with members of the European Supply Chain Forum.

The School of Industrial Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in the area of Operations Management. The group Operations, Planning, Accounting and Control (OPAC) conducts research in the area of Operations Management, with specific emphasis on

  • Planning and Control in Manufacturing, Services, and Supply Chains;
  • Distribution Logistics;
  • Maintenance and Reliability;
  • Finance and Accounting, oriented towards operational processes.

Research is generally quantitative in nature, while many of the researchers also engage in empirical research. All research is embedded in Beta, the KNAW-recognized research school for Operations Management & Logistics.

Tasks

The PostDoc will be working in the project “Cargo-driven intermodal distribution”, which has recently been funded by Dinalog (www.dinalog.nl). In the project, which is a collaboration with our partners at Delft University of Technology, RSM Erasmus University, the Port of Rotterdam and a number of logistics service providers, networks of fresh produce container cargo will be modeled. The PostDoc will specifically model this container flow, using both simplified analytical models and extensive, close-to-real-life simulation models to be used as decision support by the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Depending on the exact length of the appointment, the PostDoc researcher will spend 70-90% of his/her time on research and 10-30% of his/her time on education.

Requirements

For the PostDoc researcher positions, the applicant should have completed (or be close to completion of) a PhD degree in industrial engineering, operations research, econometrics, logistics, or operations management, with a solid background in analytical, optimization and simulation methods. The candidate’s file should demonstrate evidence of the ability to interact with industry and/or policy makers, since this is a key part of the project. An excellent command of the English language is required; a command of the Dutch language a (non-required) plus.

We offer

  • a PostDoc appointment for a period of 2 years, starting as soon as possible;
  • gross salary is in the range of €33.201 - €52.404 per annum (on a full-time basis), this includes 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end of year allowance. Salary depends on experience and knowledge;
  • a broad package of fringe benefits (including an excellent technical infrastructure, child care, moving expenses, savings schemes and excellent sports facilities);
    • for foreign staff, and for those who qualify it might be possible to apply for a tax break of max. 30% on your salary from the Dutch tax office (the TU/e will help you with the application). This is only for staff who has never previously worked in The Netherlands and who qualify for the 30% ruling.
