Assignment for NERCOMP Classrooms of the Future SIG

As mentioned in the conference description, we'd like you to do a little homework prior to arriving at the conference:  Develop a list of the top five things students currently like about the classroom technology on your campus, and a top five list for faculty. Likewise, develop a list of the top five things students currently dislike about the classroom technology on your campus, and a top five list of things faculty dislike. We also ask that you either bring, or email me, 3 pictures of those particular things you or students might like about a particular learning space.  

Top 5 Student Likes of our classrooms/learning spaces

  1. Pervasive wireless
  2. Large Displays for collaborative learning
  3. convenience of clusters across campus including QuickStations (Kiosks)
  4. ability to print
  5. Social environment
  6. Personal working environment follows them (roaming profiles and Athena home dir and config)

Things they don't know they like: (not really classroom related)
Secure single sign on to campus-wide computing resources.
Free or nearly free site-wide licensed software.

Top 5 Student Dislikes of our classrooms

  1. Inconsistent wireless (bandwidth and accessibility)
  2. Dirty clusters
  3. Damaged or missing hardware
  4. challenges printing
  5. Performance of CPU hardware and network bandwidth in some places

Top 5 Faculty Likes of our classrooms

  1. Standard reliable environment for students to work from
  2. Ability to get shared file space for classes (only on Athena)

  1. slow networks in some rooms
  2. specific applications not available in certain clusters or classrooms
  3. difficulty locatings, reserving clusters or electronic classrooms
