Primary Concerns:

  1. Ease of Culture
    1. Almost all candidates are anaerobic; not what we're used to but should be doable
    2. Several are thermophiles; what temperatures do they operate in?
      1. Thermoanaerobacterium Thermosaccharolyticum may need to be grown at 70C!!!
  2. How "engineerable" are they?
    1. Can they be transformed?  How?
      1. Clostridium appears to have been pretty well characterized
    2. Have genes from other species (particularly bacteria that are NOT gram positive) been expressed in them?
  3. Availability of background info on species
    1. genome sequence, etc.

It looks like we want to go with the C. butyricum + R. sphaeroides system

  • Better characterized, less insane growth conditions

  • No labels
