Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I obtain access to the Gradebook Module?

If you already have an existing course site which was provisioned without the Gradebook Module, you may still enable it by follow these simple manual steps:

From your existing Stellar site:

  1. Go to Website Settings
  2. Click Edit Navigation Bar
  3. Find the field that reads Gradebook Module and check the corresponding checkbox.
  4. Save by clicking Submit
  5. Gradebook should now appear as a link on the Navigation bar

Please be aware you may need to wait about 20 minutes before the Gradebook Module will be available.

I have my own (non-Stellar) course site and I am interested in using the standalone version of Gradebook Module. How do I obtain access to a standalone instance?

Please send your request to Gradebook Support. Please include the following information in your email:

  • Course name and number (e.g., Introductory Biology, 7.014)
  • Term offered (e.g., Fall 2015)
  • Emails of course instructors, TAs, graders and other administrators

Are there specific browsers that I should use to access Gradebook Module?

Please check the list of browsers supported by IS&T.

Does the Gradebook Module allow for the collection of student submissions?

Yes. As of the Fall 2015 release, the Homework tool has been integrated into the Gradebook Module. Assignments can be set to accept student submissions by checking the Allow students to submit their work online check box in Step 5. of assignment creation.

Why can't my students see their grades?

To display approved assignment grades to students, enable "View approved grades" under Students in Permissions. Likewise, make sure the grades you wish for students to view have been approved. (Note: students can never view unapproved assignment grades.)

When does a grade get released?

In the Gradebook Module, grades are viewable by students when:

  1. They have been approved by a course admin or instructor.
  2. And the Gradebook has been configured to show student's their approved grades.

How do I create assignment topics?

Categories can be created and configured from the Gradebook Settings page.

How do I transfer my assignments from past Stellar sites?

You can transfer your Stellar assignments by selecting the Import Stellar Content ZIP option located in the Assignments page Import / Export Dropdown (6)

If I want to give (non-numeric or non-letter) grades, how can I set up my assignments?

You can use the Free-form Option when creating assignments.


Free-form grades DO NOT contribute to automatic grade calculations.

If I don't collect submissions online, can I still give grades without the need for student their problem sets, papers, etc?

Yes. In the Gradebook Module, assignments grades can be given with or without student submissions.

How will students know that I've added an assignment?

They can see this @LMOD page (beta through Fall 2015).
