BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.3 for Microsoft XP/Vista

  • How to sync contacts between the BlackBerry 8830 and Vista via BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.3
  1. Start off by installing BlackBerry Desktop Manager v4.3.
    1. Standard installation options will work fine.
  2. Once installation has finished, plug in you BlackBerry 8830 with the USB cable provided by your carrier.
  3. BlackBerry Desktop Manager should automatically detect your BlackBerry 8830, if not follow the below instructions...
    1. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, below click Options to expand and then click on Connection Settings.
    2. A Connection Settings window will appear, click on Detect. This will now scan your USB ports for the BlackBerry device.
    3. If successful, you should receive a prompt stating "USB device found. PIN: XXXXXXXX". Then Press OK.
    4. Press Ok again in the Connection Settings Window.
  4. Now you should be ready to configure your Contacts synchronization. Click on Synchronize.
    ## A Synchronize window will appear, click on the Configuration tab on top. Then click on Configure Synchronization button.
    A window will appear asking what set of information you want to sync with your BlackBerry. For this setup, we will be configuring syncing of Contacts.
    Check the Address Book option, a window will appear asking what application you want to sync your contacts with, at this point stop and read below.

    In Windows Vista you have two options for contacts sync. 
      • - Microsoft Office Outlook Address Book (If you use Microsoft Outlook for email, this would be a good option).
      • - Microsoft Outlook Express (If you use Outlook Express or another mail application, this would be a good option as this will sync to Windows Contacts).
    1. Configuring for Microsoft Office Outlook Address Book.
      1. Select Microsoft Outlook.
      2. Synchronization options window will appear giving you different types of sync options.
      3. Select which type of sync you want, then click Next.
      4. Select which Outlook Profile you want to use, if you have only one Outlook Profile or your unsure, select the default "Outlook". Then click Next.
      5. A Congratulations message will appear, click Finish. Then click Ok in the following window.
      6. In the Synchronize window, click on the Synchronize tab on top. Now click Synchronize now.
      7. A confirmation window may appear asking if the changes are correct, if they are click Accept.
      8. After the sync completes, verify that contacts on both Device and Microsoft Outlook are correct. 
    2. Configuring for Microsoft Outlook Express / Windows Contacts.
      1. Select Microsoft Outlook Express.
      2. Synchronization options window will appear giving you different types of sync options.
      3. Select which type of sync you want, then click Next.
      4. A Congratulations message will appear, click Finish. Then click Ok in the following window.
      5. In the Synchronize window, click on the Synchronize tab on top. Now click Synchronize now.
      6. A confirmation window may appear asking if the changes are correct, if they are click Accept.
      7. After the sync completes, verify that contacts on both Device and Windows Contacts are correct.

  1. I testing this on my mac using vmware fusion and vista.  Installation went find.  I did run into a problem during step #4.1

    "A Synchronize window will appear, click on the Configuration tab on top. Then click on Configure Synchronization button."

    Upon clicking Configure Synchronization, I would get "An Unknown Error Has Occurred".  Disconnecting and reconnecting the device fixed the problem.
