Questions & Answers from Verizon and RIM

I spoke with Verizon today (Feb 19, 2008) about issues we have been experiencing with BlackBerry 8830's. Some of the questions were able to be answered by Verizon and the ones that couldn't were handed off to the RIM Support person whom was also on the line.

Matt Question 1: When you delete a message on the device, does it delete on the server?

RIM's Answer: Yes the message will delete from the server, as the " Synchronize deleted items between this mailbox and my device." is checked within the BIS account.

Matt Question 2: When you delete a message on the IMAP server, will it also delete off the device after account has been polled by the BIS service?  If you delete the message off the IMAP server before the BIS has polled the IMAP account, the message will not show up on the device. This question was asking if a message that is already showing on the device, and you delete it from the IMAP server, will message be remove from the device also..

RIM's Answer: Yes the message will delete from the device, as long as the " Synchronize deleted items between this mailbox and my device." is checked within the BIS account.. But the update/polling from the IMAP server to the device happens slower, this is considered a "Low priority process, and the poll can take anywhere from 90min to 6hrs". Deletion from the device to the server happen much quicker and its working per design.

** RIM and I are testing the above issue further.

Matt Question 3: When you read a message, whether on the BlackBerry or via an IMAP client like Outlook or Apple Mail, will the status (read/unread) synchronize between BlackBerry and IMAP server?

RIM's Answer: Yes it SHOULD, but does not work for all IMAP servers.

** RIM and I will be working on this via a test account, they are now aware of the issue and have seen it before. Once they have access to a test MIT account, they will work with me in figuring out the exact reasoning for why not.

Matt Question 4: When a user tried to create a BIS account for the first time, they receive an error message stating something to the effect of "this device belongs to a different carrier".. Why does this happen?

Verizon's Answer:  The user will need to update the Host Routing tables within the device, essentially the device hasn't been fully provisioned. To do so, user must go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Host Routing Tables -> Press the Menu Key -> and click Register Now. This should propagate the Host Routing table of the device, give this a few minutes (about 5-10min) then try in register the device on the BIS new account page. If this still doesn't work, contact Verizon Support.

Matt Question 5: When a user tried create a BIS account for the first time, they received an error message stating "Your account is not accessible via HTML browser..." Why does this happen?

Example of Error:

Verizon's Answer: The user must of initially tried using the Email Setup Wizard on the device, once this has been clicked and started it will lock the users PIN/Device into a user "Shell account". In order for the user to log in via the BIS webpage they will need to contact Verizon Support.

Matt Question 6: Just to confirm Verizon is using BIS version 2.4?

Verizon's Answer: Yes, confirmed.
